Eat Right When Time is Tight

Thanks for the positive feedback from last week’s podcast on cholesterol busting. Glad to hear you found it helpful.

I’ve had requests from some of you who are road warriors to talk about eating smart when you travel for business. Whether you’re on the road every week or less frequently, you already know that it can be tough to eat well and keep your competitive edge.

This week on the podcast, registered dietitian and author Patricia Bannan joins me to share real-world road warrior tips. Patricia is a former health correspondent for CNN and has been a guest on news shows nationwide, including NBC’s Today show. Just back from a media tour,Patricia shares road warrior tips from her new book Eat Right when Time is Tight.

I’m going to be a road warrior in April. Most of the time (I think you road warriors would agree) business travel requires very long days, waking up early to get to the airport then long, multi-course meals with clients.

It can be hard to find healthy food or the time to squeeze in any ‘me’ time. Yet, we road warriors want to keep our competitive edge.

Here are a couple of the travel tips which Patricia shared to help us stay sharp and not overindulge so that we don’t up wearing that extra food home on our belly or thighs.

“Eat Right When Time is Tight” Tips for Business Travelers:

  1. When you first check in to your hotel have a quick peek at the fitness center. Then you know exactly where it’s located. Make it a priority to do a quick workout first thing in the morning. Even thirty minutes on the treadmill or a twenty-minute session of lifting weights will translate into higher productivity and less stress throughout a busy day.
  2. If it’s not too late, and depending where you’re staying, look for a local market to stock up on healthy snacks—bottled water, energy bars, fresh or dried fruit, nuts, and yogurt if you have a refrigerator.

  3. Carry your Eat Right Survival Stash (healthy, already-portioned, shelf-stable foods) in your briefcase or bag and a bottle of water or tea as your first weapon of choice.
  4. Make sure you stay hydrated. Remember that thirst often masquerades as hunger, and opt for no-calorie or low-calorie beverages throughout the day. Watch your alcohol intake—those calories add up fast, especially if you start drinking before evening.

Five No-Bloat Foods to Help Survive the Holiday Season

no-bloatHow’s your stress level this week? We’re into the first week of December. Is your to-do list growing and is your calendar jam-packed? Do the holiday foods and festivities have you feeling a little bloated? Whether that bloated feeling comes from swallowing too much air as you stand, talk and eat at your friend’s party, or from not getting enough fiber in your diet due to party food overload or from consuming too much salt and sodium at a food fest, there are foods to counteract the big bloat. In this month’s Family Circle magazine, check out The No-Bloat Diet including these no-bloat foods and more.

  1. Dried plums and 100% plum juice (not to be confused with prune juice): provide the body with fiber, potassium, magnesium and sorbitol…all found naturally in the fresh plum and which also help keep the digestive track humming along. You might have seen PlumSmart juice in your grocery, which is new from SunSweet, and is plum juice enhanced with dextrin, a prebiotic fiber which works as a teammate along with probiotics such as found in yogurt to increase the beneficial cultures in the digestive tract.
  2. Whole-wheat tortillas: contain insoluble fiber which acts like Roto-Rooter to keep everything running smoothly. This same insoluble fiber is found in whole grains including whole wheat pasta and bread, brown rice and fruits and vegetables.
  3. Melon: a diuretic fruit due to its high water content.
  4. Cucumbers and lettuces: also have a high water content and act as diuretics to release some of the retained fluids.
  5. Avocado: when you consume too much sodium, fluid retention can be an issue. The mineral potassium has the opposite effect helping to shed the fluid. An added bonus is the positive effect of potassium-rich foods on helping to lower blood pressure.

Munch on This: Four Ways to Eat More and Weigh Less

eat-moreHow does eating more and weighing less sound to you? I like the idea because I like to eat. Here’s how it works. The latest nutrition science on weight loss suggests two points to remember:

  1. Choose foods that are low in calorie or what’s also referred to as low energy dense foods. They are low in calorie but high in either fiber or water or both. You feel full longer on less calories.
  2. Include lean protein at every meal and snack if possible. Protein is also known for helping you to feel full for a longer period of time or what is referred to as satiety.

I chatted with Family Circle Senior Health Editor Margit Ragland about this concept and here are four easy food swaps to try. Notice that all four swaps include high fiber foods and lean protein except the popcorn snack which you could sprinkle with parmesan cheese for a protein boost.

Breakfast:

Instead of: 2 slices of white toast with 1 tbsp of butter

Fill up with: 1 cup of non-fat or low-fat yogurt with ½ cup of blueberries and ½ cup pineapple

Lunch:

Instead of: A turkey sandwich on a roll with lettuce, tomato and mustard

Fill up with: A turkey burger or a turkey sandwich on a whole wheat bun with lettuce, tomato and 1 tsp ketchup or mustard

Dinner:

Instead of: Spaghetti with marinara sauce

Fill up with: Filet of sole in a lemon pepper seasoning with asparagus and a baked sweet potato OR add lean meatballs to the spaghetti and try the whole grain spaghetti

Snack:

Instead of: 4 ounces of honey wheat pretzels

Fill up with: 5 cups of low-fat microwave popcorn (sprinkle with parmesan cheese to add protein if desired)

Cool Waters: Refreshing, Healthy, Homemade Thirst Quenchers

cool-drinkCan drinking water be cool? You bet it can when it’s infused with fruit, vegetables and herbs to create extraordinary thirst-quenching beverages. How does Blueberry Twist sound or Honeydew-Mint Mist? My guest on this week’s podcast is Brian Preston-Campbell author of the new book Cool Waters, 50 Refreshing, Healthy, Homemade Thirst Quenchers. Brian is a professional food stylist and former chef who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America. He has brought his talent for food styling to ad campaigns for companies such a Starbucks and Godiva.

The photographs are delicious as are the recipes which are caffeine free with no added sugar. You can enjoy your refreshing beverage while keeping down the calories you consume. A terrific feature is that each recipe has food pairings listed at the bottom. Useful and fun, the food pairings help you put together quick menu ideas.
